My sangha held its annual Hungry Ghost observance today. Traditionally, Hungry Ghost observances and festivals are held in midsummer in Asia, but here the Hungry Ghosts seem more compatible with Halloween and Día de los Muertos than with the long, bright days of summer.
Our tradition includes an altar with a Hungry Ghost tree. Children in our Zen Kids program write what they are greedy about on strips of paper, then stuff the paper into the heads of cloth "ghosts" and hang them on the tree. On observance day, sangha members bring flowers and fruit for the altar and bags of groceries to be donated to a local food bank.
