It is one of the main parts of a lay Buddhists home, the alter table. Some may call it the Gohonzon table according to what school of Buddhism you practice but it is the part that a lot of lay Buddhista TMs forget about or ignore but it is one of the most important parts.

I've been trying to think of something profound to say about the new year and pretty much drew a blank. So I'm just going to cite some texts I find inspirational. Feel free to add your own links and citations to favorite texts in the comments.
First, as a follow up to the last post, here's an essay from Soka Gakkai International called "Changing Poison Into Medicine." I just found it this morning, but it pretty much says what I was trying to say yesterday.
A classic text from Tibetan Buddhism -- "Wishing Prayer for the Attainment of the Ultimate Mahamudra" by the Third Karmapa.
Of course, the Metta Sutta -- here's a translation.
And Dogen's Genjokoan, the great Soto Zen classic.
May all beings be liberated.
