Another Karmapa Controversy

Last week Indian police raided the monastery of His Holiness the 17th Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje, and found the equivalent of $750,000 in cash in several foreign currencies. Possession of the cash is, apparently, in violation of Indian currency exchange laws. The money was found in the possession of an aide to His Holiness, the Shakti Lama, who is now under arrest.

The Karmapa's office is saying the cash is donations from the Karmapa's followers. Investigations are focused on the portion of the cash in Chinese yuan, which has stirred up old suspicions that His Holiness is a Chinese operative and somehow a threat to Indian national security.  However, it's far more likely that Beijing sees His Holiness as a threat to their plans for domination over Tibetan Buddhism.
